Local farms sell direct in a handful of ways. Each fits a different kind of shopper. Here are the five you will see in this directory, and how each one works.
Farmers markets
The easiest starting point. Many producers in one place, on a set day, with samples and people to talk to. Prices are posted, and you can buy a single item. Go near opening for the best selection.
Farm stands and farm stores
A stand or store at the farm itself. Some run on an honor box. Some keep set hours. The food travels no distance at all, and you see the farm you are buying from. Check hours before you drive out, since many stands are seasonal.
Farm gate sales
No stand, no store. You call, text, or email the farm and arrange a pickup. This is how a lot of small producers sell eggs, honey, and meat. It feels unusual the first time. It is normal to the farmer. A short message that says what you want and asks when to come by is all it takes.
CSA programs
You pay at the start of the season and pick up a share of the harvest each week. Read our CSA guide before you sign up.
U-pick
You harvest it yourself and pay by the pound or by the bucket. Common for berries, apples, and pumpkins. Bring containers, ask what rows are open, and pick clean.
Pick one and start
You do not need a system. Pick the option that fits your week, and buy one thing direct this month. Start with your location to see who sells near you.
