How u-pick farms work

Published 2026-08-23

At a u-pick farm, you harvest the crop yourself and pay by weight or by container. It is the cheapest way to buy fruit in quantity, and kids remember it long after they forget the grocery store.

Before you go

Call, text, or check the farm’s page first. U-pick depends on ripeness and weather, so open days change with little notice. Ask three things: what is ready, what does it cost, and do they supply containers. Bring cash unless the farm says otherwise. Small farms do not all take cards at the field.

What to bring

  • Containers, if the farm asks for them
  • Cash
  • Sun hat, water, and closed shoes
  • A cooler in the car for the drive home

How to pick well

Ask which rows are open, and stay in them. Pick ripe fruit only, since most u-pick crops stop ripening once picked. Handle plants the way the farmer shows you. Rough picking damages next week’s crop, and farms remember careful visitors.

Picking with kids

U-pick works with children, within reason. Give each child their own small container. Agree on a sampling rule before you start, because some farms allow field snacking and some charge for it. Ask instead of assuming.

After the harvest

You will come home with more than you planned. Berries freeze well on a tray before bagging. Extra fruit becomes jam, pie filling, or a gift. If a batch turns out great, tell the farm. They will point you to the best rows next year.
